Knowledge base

This is a working glossary of conversion rate optimization: what each term means, how the thing it names actually behaves, and where it is commonly misused. Each entry answers one question in full rather than in a sentence, and links to the ones it depends on.

Proving it worked

The measurement vocabulary — and the three ways a conversion result is usually overstated.

CRO holdout
A randomly assigned group of visitors excluded from all optimization treatment on an ongoing basis, so that the difference between them and treated visitors isolates the effect of the treatment.
Incremental conversion lift
The additional conversions attributable to an intervention, calculated as the difference between the conversion rate of a treated group and that of a randomly assigned untreated control.
Conversion goal
The specific visitor action a website counts as a successful outcome, against which conversion rate and any optimization effect are measured.

Reading the visitor

How a single visit is interpreted while it is still happening, and what can honestly be inferred from it.

Session intelligence
The interpretation of an individual website visit while it is in progress, converting raw interaction events into a structured account of the visitor's behaviour and difficulties.
Intent prediction
The inference, during a live session, of what a visitor is trying to do and which action they are most likely to take next, based on the sequence of their observed behaviour.
Adaptive CRO
Conversion rate optimization in which the experience is adjusted per visitor according to their observed behaviour, rather than by assigning a whole population to one fixed variation.

Acting on the page

What an optimization system does to a live page, in which formats, and at which moment.

CRO intervention
A conditional change to a live web page, shown to a specific visitor at a specific moment in response to their behaviour, with the aim of helping them complete a desired action.
Exit intent
The detection, from a visitor's interaction pattern, that they are about to leave the current page — used to trigger a final message before they go.

Inside Cromanion

One named component, explained for anyone who has heard the name and wants the plain version.

What is a Site Brain?
Site Brain is Cromanion's name for the model of a website an agent builds before it can act — page roles, offers, objections, conversion goals and brand — and why acting without one produces generic advice.

See it on your own site

Paste one tag. Cromanion crawls your site, watches real sessions in Learn mode, and only acts when you switch it on — with a permanent 10% holdout proving what it caused.
